Workplace Strengths Based Approaches

Brief Annotated Bibliography

Buckingham, M. & Clifton, D., (2001) Now Discover your Strengths. Free Press

The authors’ extensive research on strengths application in employment is one of the foundations of this course. Buckingham also coauthored with Coffman, First Break all the Rules.

Buckingham, M., (2007) Go Put Your Strengths to Work: 6 Powerful Steps to Achieve Outstanding Performance. Free Press

Collecting appreciative feedback, associating it with strengths and then developing a plan for integrating strengths into life are the core activities outlined in this book. Templates for worksheets for this work are included.

Rath, T. (2007) StrengthsFinder 2.0: A new and upgraded edition of the online test from Gallup’s Now, Discover Your Strengths. Gallup Press

This book is in a “handbook” format that is nice to give to clients. It explains all of the strengths, gives “ideas for action” for each strength and also suggestions for “working with others.” The book can be personalized in that it comes with labels to adhere to the cover for a person’s top 5 strengths.

Rath, T. & Conchie, B., (2008). Strength Based Leadership. Gallup Press.

Like the other StrengthsFinder books, this book includes a code to take the “leadership version of the StrengthsFinder.” This book is not unlike the other StrengthFinder books in that it explains the importance of using your strengths and explains how to develop each one except that this book is all slanted towards the context of the leader.

Schiller, M., Holland, B. M., & Riley, D. Editors (2001) Appreciative Leaders: In the Eye of the Beholder

The Taos Institute. A collection of interviews with 15 leaders who live and lead from an appreciative perspective. An excellent text for those who like to see leaders in action rather than just study theory.
